Welcome on behalf of the Organizing Committees<\/em><\/p>

Lord Byron was a great believer in being on the spot, not forming impressions or making pronouncements from afar.\u00a0 For this reason and for many others, there\u2019s no more appropriate place to honor Byron than where he traveled to enlist in freedom\u2019s battle.\u00a0 What more suitable tribute than to gather in Greece, where Byron lived his last months, and to stand in Messolonghi at the site of the house where he breathed his last breaths?\u00a0 We are delighted that so many Byronists from all over the world share this feeling, and we welcome you to Athens and Messolonghi for the 48th<\/sup>\u00a0International Byron Conference,\u00a0held under the auspices and with the support of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture.<\/p>

The unfolding conversation of the this conference, with three keynote lectures and presentations by IBC regulars and new voices alike, will reveal and assess many aspects of a famously complex and mobile man and poet.\u00a0 Complementing the scholarly presentations will be a conversation between Byron\u2019s descendants the Earl of Lytton and Lord Byron, the reading and dramatic interpretation of poetry, sung and instrumental music, and visits to notable sites and sights in Athens, Messolonghi, and its surroundings.\u00a0 At the Benaki Museum in Athens we\u2019ll see the iconic Phillips portrait of Byron. In Messolonghi at Byron House we\u2019ll visit the Museum of Lord Byron and Philhellenism to view the new permanent collection \u201cLord Byron and Philhellenism\u201d along with exhibits of art and photography centered on Byron.<\/p>

The days of the International Byron Conference will be full and eventful, but we hope that there will also be interludes of relaxation, meditation, and individual exploration, renewal of old friendships and establishment of new ones.\u00a0 If the air of Greece made Byron a poet as he claimed, it\u2019s our earnest hope that it and the events of these shared days of commemoration will inspire all of us in our different ways.<\/p>

Wreath-laying ceremony at the monument newly renovated by the Messolonghi Byron Society on the site where Byron breathed his last on 19 April 1824. Here the University of Athens dedicated a memorial column to commemorate the centennial of Byron\u2019s death.<\/p>

10:30 \u2013 11:00 Visit to the cathedral of St. Spyridon<\/strong>, visited by Byron and where his lungs were kept in a silver box until 1881. Since 1881 the silver relic box has been interred under the foundation of his marble statue in the Garden of Heroes.<\/p>

11:00 \u2013 11:30 Visit to the Municipal Museum of History and Municipal Art Gallery.<\/strong><\/p>

11:30 \u2013 12:30. Visit to the Garden of Heroes<\/strong>. Stretching alongside the defensive walls of Messolonghi, an extensive memorial garden with many monuments dedicated to Greek fighters and to Philhellenes who fought and fell during the siege and the Exodus (Sortie) of April 1826. At the center of the Garden of Heroes you will find the grave of Markos Botzaris as well as a statue of Lord Byron, underneath which are buried the poet\u2019s lungs.<\/p>

12:30 \u2013 13:00. Visit to the Chapel of Panayia Finikias<\/strong>, the island chapel dedicated to the Virgin of the Palm Tree, where Byron used to ride at sunset from Messolonghi and where he fell ill in heavy rain on 10 April 1824.<\/p>

13:00 \u2013 14:00. Visit to the Salt Museum<\/strong> at Tourlida, the only salt museum in Greece. Visitors can learn everything there is related to salt, from its first appearance in the world up until today. The museum is next to the salt mine of Tourlida, where there are also restaurants for lunch and a swimming beach.<\/p>
