Greek Delegation and Mesolongi Byron Society Mark 200 Years Since Lord Byron’s Passing at Newstead Abbey

Nottingham, December 21, 2024- The national delegation of the Ministry of Culture of Greece, in collaboration with the Mesolongi Byron Society, visited Newstead Abbey in Nottingham to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the death of the renowned poet and Philhellene, Lord Byron.

The visit, which took place on Saturday, November 21, was orchestrated by the Deputy Councillor of Nottingham, Mr. Pavlos Kotsonis. The delegation was treated to a memorable guided tour of Newstead Abbey, Byron’s ancestral home, providing a unique opportunity to delve into the history and legacy of the celebrated poet.

The tour was followed by a special ceremony honouring Lord Byron. Distinguished members of Nottingham society gathered to hear speeches reflecting on Byron’s profound impact on Greek Independence and his enduring literary legacy. The delegation from Greece presented gifts to the assembled dignitaries, symbolising the strong ties of friendship and shared cultural heritage between Greece and the United Kingdom.

Among the notable attendees were the Sheriff of Nottingham, the Lord Mayor of Gedling, the Executive Member for Climate and Cultural for Nottingham City Council, and representatives from various societies and groups in Nottingham and Gedling. The event fostered meaningful exchanges, as attendees shared their knowledge and perspectives on Lord Byron’s life, his philhellenic contributions, and his influence on modern culture.
